Earl Scruggs & J.D. Crowe
Photographic Portraits of Two Iconic Masters of the Bluegrass Banjo
The Earl Scruggs Photographs
The images of Earl in the Scruggs gallery were taken by myself in 1973 and 1974 and have never before been published or shown prior to appearing on this website in 2022.
The photographs were taken at the Scruggs’ home at the time on Donna Drive in Madison, Tennessee, the green room at the Grand Ole Opry and a couple concert venues; one being the McCarter Theater in Princeton, NJ.
The what, why and how of these photos is briefly explained on the “Details” & “Notes” pages on this website.
Thankfully, the films were in good shape after nearly 50 years of storage. But without the internet, personal computers, modern scanners and software to digitize them, they would still be in my attic.

The J.D. Crowe Photographs
The black & white and color images of J.D. Crowe in the two galleries on this website were taken by myself at his home in Lexington, Kentucky in 1983. Again, as with the Scruggs photos, they have never before been published or shown.
J.D.’s negatives and transparencies spent less time in my attic than Earl’s, but were thankfully also in great shape and were resurrected at the same time.
View the “Details” page on this website for a bit more information on the photo session.
